How Often Should You Service An Air Conditioner?

|

You may have heard that you need to service your air conditioner before you turn it on for the first time this summer, but is that really true? Year after year you turn on your air conditioner and it always seems to work just fine. Why should you bother to have it serviced? Air conditioning tune-up service is preventative maintenance that can help you avoid unexpected repairs and breakdowns, keep your system running efficiently, and keep your system’s warranty valid.

Chesterfield Service is happy to make sure that your air conditioning unit is in good condition so that it works reliably throughout the summer heat. Keep reading to learn more about the benefits of regular AC maintenance.

When Should I Schedule Air Conditioner Maintenance?

Ideally, you should schedule your air conditioner maintenance to be done once a year. A member of our team will inspect the system for any damage that occurred since the last inspection and look for signs of wear and tear. If we notice any parts that need to be replaced, doing so early will help prevent system breakdowns and the need for repairs on the hottest day of the year. From mid March – October, weather permitting, our team can still perform air conditioning maintenance.

DIY Air Conditioner Maintenance Tasks

Besides scheduling service for your air conditioner, there are other AC service tasks you can do to help keep your system running smoothly.

  • Change your air filters. Your air filters keep fresh air flowing into your AC unit and help with energy efficiency. It’s a good idea to change these filters every 3 months, or 90 days.
  • Keep your outdoor unit clean. Make sure that you don’t blow grass clippings into your lawn mower when you’re mowing the lawn. Also, do not lean anything against your outdoor unit. If your ac unit is under a tree, be sure to regularly remove sticks or debris from the unit.
  • Clean condenser and evaporator coils. Use compressed air or a brush to remove light layers of dirt. Turn off the power to the system and use foam cleaners and spray the unit with a hose for excessive dirt buildup.

What Happens if I Don’t Service My Air Conditioner Every Year?

When you don’t have your air conditioner serviced annually, it’s not the end of the world. However, it is more likely that you may experience breakdowns or sudden repairs. It’s not abnormal to need air conditioning repairs once a season, but if you find that your air conditioner needs to be repaired frequently, then you might want to consider replacing your AC system.

Most manufacturers’ warranties require annual AC service to be performed on their systems. If this maintenance service is not done regularly, it will cause your warranty to become invalid. An invalid warranty won’t cover the parts needed to repair your cooling system, and your repair costs would be more expensive.
